Google BERT Update How Will It Affect Your Website Traffic?   If you keep your ear to the ground on all things SEO it would have been difficult to miss the rumblings over the last week caused by BERT. Last week Google announced BERT - what they call the most important update since RankBrain launched 5 years ago - with an official Google estimate that it will likely effect 1 in 10 searches. But what is it, how will it affect SEO in general and will it impact traffic to your website?   What is BERT? BERT, which is a network-based technique for natural language processing, stands for...

What is GDPR? Is It Important? Should You Even Care?   I'm guessing by now your inboxes are creaking at the seams with emails from all those lists you have previously joined asking, and in some cases begging and pleading, to stay in touch by re-consenting to those very same lists. Ironically all this spam has been generated by the European Communities anti-spam legislation the General Data Protection Regulation. Yep, that's what GDPR stands for, but what does it actually mean to you? (Other than early onset of repetitive strain injury caused by responding to all those emails...

Google Analytics Data Retention Controls   You probably received an email from Google the other day. Google emailed their Google Analytics customers with a long email about GDPR and data retention controls. They advised that you need to "review these data retention settings and modify as needed" before May 25th when GDPR becomes enforced. If you're like me you probably ignored it...

When In the Shed Secretarial opened its virtual doors 18 years ago, I was bombarded with advice on time management and how to be more efficient and productive. Very quickly, I tried (and mostly discarded) every tip in the book, thinking them all more bother than they were worth. Why was that?  What was I doing wrong? It turns out that productivity tips are like shoes - you have to try on an awful lot before you find the perfect fit. Here are a few of my old favourites, the old comfortable ones that get me through the day.   Location, location, location. If you’re...

The (Facebook) Party is over!   If you're reading this you probably own a small business. And I'll wager that you've probably spent a disproportionate amount of time promoting your business on Facebook. Posting about your business on your own business Facebook page. Sharing posts from your business Facebook page in multiple Facebook groups. And probably achieving huge ROI. Getting your business in front of literally thousands and thousand of potential local customers. How is this possible! Free access to the Facebook Community! Not any more. The party is over. Zuck has vowed to 'Fix Facebook'. The new algorithm dramatically reduces organic reach, you're not allowed to run 'comment and share' posts...

Why You Shouldn’t Be Blogging (and what you should be doing instead!)   You run a small business. You’ve heard somewhere that you should be blogging. You aren’t sure why. You aren’t sure what you should be blogging about and if you’re completely honest you aren’t sure what blogging is.. (or why it’s even called blogging!) I’m going to be controversial here and say that No, you should not be blogging…. There, that shocked you didn’t it? Before you heave a sigh of relief, put down your metaphorical pen and paper and reach for the biscuit tin and TV remote keep reading…. Don’t blog ……but do create content. Hmmm….creating content…that sounds even...

Toxic Backlinks - Are they dragging your website down? Before we go into what ‘Toxic Backlinks’ actually are and why they are damaging to your website, brand, credibility and reputation, lets briefly cover what a legitimate ‘white hat’ backlink is…(‘white hat’ is the term used for Google approved SEO best practice and comes with a fairly high level of confidence that you will never be penalised by a Google Algorithm update). [vc_separator type='transparent' position='center' color='' thickness='' up='20' down='20'] What is a Backlink? External Backlinks are the arteries of 'The Internet' sending lifeblood ('Link Juice') between its interconnected websites, a backlink from one site to...
